Seasonal Landslide Activity Lags Annual Precipitation Pattern in the Pacific Northwest

چکیده

Seasonal variations in landslide activity remain understudied compared to recent advances early warning at hourly daily timescales. Here, we learn the seasonal pattern of monthly Pacific Northwest from five heterogeneous inventories with differing spatial and temporal coverage reporting protocols combined a Bayesian multi-level model. We find that is distinctly seasonal, credible increases intensity, inter-annual variability, probability marking onset season November. Peaks January intensity February lag annual peak mean precipitation more variable winter than summer, when landslides are rare. For given rainfall, up 10 times higher November, underlining importance antecedent hillslope conditions.

Monsoon Gyres of the Northwest Pacific: Influences of ENSO, the MJO, and the Pacific–Japan Pattern

Anobjective definition ofmonsoon gyres in the northwest Pacificwas developed in order to construct a gyre climatology. Over a 31-yr period, 53 gyres were identified with a median formation location at 16.58N, 1358E. More than 80% formed during July–September. More than half of gyres developed during El Niño periods at a median location 1200 km farther to the east-southeast than during La Niña. ...

Seasonal temperature and precipitation recorded in the intra-annual oxygen isotope pattern of meteoric water and tree-ring cellulose

Modern and ancient wood is a valuable terrestrial record of carbon ultimately derived from the atmosphere and oxygen inherited from local meteoric water. Many modern and fossil wood specimens display rings sufficiently thick for intra-annual sampling, and analytical techniques are rapidly improving to allow for precise carbon and oxygen isotope measurements on very small samples, yielding unpre...

1,500 year quantitative reconstruction of winter precipitation in the Pacific Northwest.

Multiple paleoclimate proxies are required for robust assessment of past hydroclimatic conditions. Currently, estimates of drought variability over the past several thousand years are based largely on tree-ring records. We produced a 1,500-y record of winter precipitation in the Pacific Northwest using a physical model-based analysis of lake sediment oxygen isotope data. Our results indicate th...

Seasonal Climate Variability and Change in the Pacific Northwest of the United States

Observed changes in climate of the U.S. Pacific Northwest since the early twentieth century were examined using four different datasets. Annual mean temperature increased by approximately 0.68–0.88C from 1901 to 2012, with corroborating indicators including a lengthened freeze-free season, increased temperature of the coldest night of the year, and increased growing-season potential evapotransp...
